Our Heritage

Founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1908, Audubon’s story began with Russell Houston and G. Robinson Hunt desiring a convenient place to golf. The founders purchased one acre for a clubhouse and leased an adjoining farm for a golf course. They hired nationally acclaimed architect, Thomas Bendelow, and created a golf course with an enduring original design on the land that eventually became Club property in 1927.

The development of the Club led to the establishment of the lovely City of Audubon Park. The neighborhood’s growth was fueled by the success of the Club. Like the Club, Audubon Park was designed with character and thoughtfulness to the mission of ensuring dignity, value, and beauty.

Recent updates by local architect, Spencer Holt, have kept the course current in its presentation. Lifetime home to hall of famers Pee Wee Reese and Paul Hornung, Audubon has entertained public figures like Bobby Jones, Bing Crosby, Happy Chandler, Walter Hagen, Babe Zaharias and Carol Channing in its storied past. In recent years, Audubon has been the frequent host of the Kentucky Open, Kentucky State Amateur, Kentucky Senior Amateur and KGA Mid-Amateur state championships.

In addition to its impressive golf legacy, since the pool first opened in 1934, the Club has maintained an outstanding swimming program. Audubon supports a very active youth swim team, the Gators, which has been and continues to be, a hallmark of Audubon families.

For over 100 years, Audubon Country Club has brought much enjoyment and fantastic memories to members, staff, and guests with its incomparable “friendly feeling”.
